Dry, hacking cough, becomes increasingly productive and purulent, worsens at night. Rhinorrhea occurring 3 to 4 days after onset of cough. Coarse breath sounds, rhonchi, and coarse, changing rales. Low substernal discomfort or burning in the chest. Chronic bronchitis = a productive cough lasting more than 3 months. Secretions are disposed of in sealed plastic bags. Avoiding exposure of child to second-hand smoke. Uri symptoms of cough, coryza, and rhinorrhea. Respiratory distress marked by noisy, raspy breathing, cyanosis. Rales and prolonged expiratory phase of respirations. Low to moderate fever up to 102 f (38. 9 c) Thick mucus, exudate, and mucosal edema obstruct smaller airways (bronchioles) May be accompanied by otitis media and conjunctivitis. Respiratory syncytial virus (rsv) being most common. Rsv identified by one of following tests: Rapid immunofluorescent antibody (ifa) from direct or aspiration of nasal secretions or nasopharyngeal washings. Arterial blood gases (abg) reveal decreased ph and paco2 > 45 mm hg.
