Document Summary
Goal is to make the unconscious, conscious. Long term process takes years of talking, may need multiple sessions per week. Therapist is non-directive: doesn"t direct what is talked about. Example: talk about what you want to say. It"s like a journey into your mind. Techniques: free association: patient talks about anything. Avoiding topics is important: dream analysis: dreams show what is most likely in the unconscious. Symbols are connected to our own unconscious. Symbols have different meaning to different people. Persons interpret/analyze their own dreams: analyze resistance: wanting to stop doing something. Canceling plans: analyze transference: patient reacts to the therapist as if they were somebody in their real life. The basic nature of people: tabular rasa born as a blank slate. John locke (late 1600"s) believed in the nurture aspect. If you are born healthy you rely on environment to shape you. Types of learning: classical conditioning: 1906, ivan pavlov. Example: clap is stimulus, blinking is a response.
