Theories of health behavior: health belief model: All of the same things involved in health belief model adding in self- efficacy. Self- efficacy: believing they have the power/control over the situation. Theory of reasoned action: theory of planned behavior + self efficacy (actions towards behavior) -> and/or (subjective norms (do we care what others think?)) 4 basic behaviors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle: don"t smoke, curbing drinking, achieving a healthy weight, exercising. Smoking the leading cause of preventable death in the us. 1 in 4 of smokers die from smoke related diseases. 5% of smokers who try to quite succeed. 25%-35% succeed when using methods developed by health psychologists. Heavy episodic (binge drinking) drinking 5 or more drinks for men/ 4 drinks or more for women on one occasion -> causes an increase in cancer, liver problems, pregnancy complications, brain shrinkage.
