QU 400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Michel Foucault, Panopticism, Panopticon
Document Summary
People in today"s society are constantly trying to find the place where they fit in. Sometimes it is easier to pretend they belong somewhere when they know that they truly don"t. Sometimes it is easier to change how we act or how we perceive others in order to feel a sense of belonging. Michel foucault might argue that people act the way they do because visibility is a trap (286). When we know we are able to be seen by all, our behavior changes. Panopticism, author michel foucault examines how power and control have changed throughout the years and how it can effect a group of people, specifically when they can or cannot be seen. Foucault emphasized the separation between a pure community and a disciplined society (284). He believed that there was a need for a disciplined society and that this could be achieved through the proper use of power.
