The use of rewards to manipulate motivation
Reward “things” used to modify or manipulate behaviour- material rewards
Reinforcement: personal interactions-verbal and non-verbal
Token Rewards; aka
Behaviour Modification
I want you to stop smoking so everytime take one out and not smoke, give a reward
Operant Conditioning
Rat through maze.. went right way, got a reward
Token Economies
**Contingency Management**
Contingency: Relationships between a behaviour and its consequences
What I want you to do, if you do it =reward/ If you don’t = consequences

outcomes

Examples;
Scholarship, title, money, social status, trophies, food, free time, privileges
Undesirable behaviour can be eliminated though the use of token rewards
Ex. Change behaviours of swim team
Coach put up attendance sheet in a public place so others could see it (intensity)
Had team competitions to improve motivation
Desirable behaviour can be enhanced through use of token rewards
Ex. Improve supportive positive communication and increase shooting proficiency
If I can get recognition from my teammates, I’m going to keep working hard
Token rewards have a spill over effect on non-target behaviours
Give a reward in one situation, can often help fix other situations
Examples:
Enjoying practice even thought all athletes prefer games
Attendance and promptness
Interest and attitudes
Conformance to rules
Token rewards can be used to improve individual skill and/or task performance- not just used to
change behaviour
