PSYC-101 Lecture 3: PsychChapter3
Document Summary
Developmental psychology: the study of progressive changes in behavior and abilities, involves every stage of life from conception to death. Sensitive period: a period in which infants are more susceptible to particular types of environmental influences. Authoritarian parents: enforce rigid rules and demand strict obedience to authority. Overly permissive parents: give little guidance, allow too much freedom, or don"t hold children accountable for their actions. Gerontologist: a psychologist who studies aging and the aged. Development covers every stage of life, not just (cid:498)growing up into an adult. (cid:499) it begins at conception, when the genes are transmitted from parents to offspring. Dna is organized into 46 chromosomes, which hold the instructions for heredity. Another influence on heredity from conception is the environment. While the womb is highly protected, external factors like the health of the mother can affect the child. Newborns also are influenced heavily by external factors, because they depend on adults for survival.
