Most recent world religion to be founded-by guru nanak c. 1500 ce. Today, sikh"s total about 25 million followers around the world. Prevalent in india (the punjab), delhi, sweden, the usa, canada, the uk. Divine test: guru granth sahib, sometimes called the adi granth- original book . World affirming vs. other religions in india that were world renouncing . Belief in one god-a supreme being without form-but with many names/characteristics- akai purakh, the timeless being. Emphasis on egalitarianism, tolerance, service to others, righteous livelihood. The punjab (5 rivers) region is defined by its fertile lands due to it being surrounded by 5 different rivers. Served as a crossroads for the meeting/diffusion of multiple cultures & religions. Sufi islam was established by the 11th century & by 13th century with the est. of the delhi sultanate, sufis moved into north india. Distinct hindu communities still existed-vishnu, shiva, devi. Melting pot of religions & cultures gave rise/ influences to sikhism.
