Document Summary

They are 2 types of proprioceptors (the sense of where your body is in space), muscle spindles and golgi tendon organs. Muscles spindles (aka stretch receptors) are located within the muscle. Each muscle spindle contains intrafusal muscle fibers which has the 1a sensory axon. The 1a sensory axon detects the length of the muscle fibers. Once the muscle is stretch out it stretches both the extrafusal and intrafusal fibers which a\causes the 1a axon to stretch. The alpha motor neurons go to the extrafusal fibers. The alpha motor neurons are the ones that are responsible for muscle contraction. The gamma motor neurons go to the intrafusal muscle fibers within the muscle spindle. Note: the extrafusal muscle fibers are regular muscle fibers that make up the big bulk of the muscle: the stretch reflex/ myotatic reflex example tapping of tendon below the knee causes the foot to extend.
