Document Summary

Both broca"s and wernicke"s are for the majority of people found in the left hemisphere. Broca"s area is necessary for the production of speech, and muscle movement need to speak. The video shown today will show a woman who is suffering from broca"s aphasia also had paralysis on the right side of her body. Broca"s aphasia does not have to involve paralysis but due to its close proximity to the motor cortex it is not surprising that it often does. This is why right-side aphasia often occurs with broca"s aphasia. Wernicke"s area is required for meaning and understanding of speech. The left hemisphere is dominant for language but there are still some language functions within the right hemisphere. These areas are not as well defined, and not a lot is known about them. Some information was gained from people who suffered damage from a stroke in some of these areas.
