Compliance: how someone behaves in accordance with an order/directive. Remunerative power: material resources used in exchange for compliance. Concepts of organization and hierarchy of staff positions. Prison staff conflict can evolve between different groups of personnel and between inmates and staff. Sykes emphasized that although in formal terms correctional officials have the power to extract compliance from the prisoner, in fact that power is limited and in many ways they depend on inmate cooperation. Much of the public believes that prisons are run in an authoritarian manner. Prisoners do not recognize the legitimacy of their keepers, thus do not cooperate. Correctional officers often rely on rewards and punishments to gain cooperation. Choice job assignments, residence in honor units, and favorable parole reports. Good time is given to inmates who do not break rules. Tolerate minor rule infractions for compliance on major rules. Some rule violations do not merit officer attention.
