Why do we punish: regina v. dudley and stevens; from england, in the 1800s, the defendants were charged with murder on the high seas. When the defendants and the victims were castaways in a storm out at sea, 1600 miles off the coast of england. They were put in a life boat, with the only thing they had to eat were 2 one pound bins of turnips and no water. On the 4th day, a turtle was caught and used for food for 8 days. Their only source of freshwater was the occasional rainwater. On the 18th day, dudley and stevens suggested sacri cing richard parker for the purpose of eating him for sustenance. Brooks was against the idea, so they waited a few more days, eating absolutely nothing. Parker was not consulted in this and because weaker as the days went on.
