What are the social factors believed to cause or affect delinquent behaviors: interpersonal interactions (social relationships with family, friends, school, social conditions (unrest, economic stress) we are seeing that right now in a big way, poverty, racial disparity. The learning theory states that delinquency is learned in a process that is similar to learning any other behavior. The social control theory maintains that all people have the potential to commit crime; however, if they maintain positive social bonds they are more likely to resist delinquency. The labeling and stigma associated with crime can have long term negative effects, and as a result may promote the continuation of crime. Studies suggest that reducing the stigma and labeling may have a positive effect in bringing about a change in the behavior of the juvenile offender. Efforts and alternative programs have been developed to reduce the negative impact of arrest and labeling. Alternative community-based sanctions have substituted some state run programs.
