15th century renaissance court culture of italy as a dance interpretation of fencing. Ballet was further developed in the french court from the time of louis xiv in the. This is reflected in the largely french vocabulary of ballet. Performed 80 roles in over 40 ballets. Ballet de la nuit (1653) was an extravagant ballet that took place over 12 hours and is what gave louis xiv the name the sun king. Louix xiv played 5 parts in the ballet. Dance was an important part of louis xiv"s court, and your dancing skills could affect where you stood in the court. After its initial start in the french court system, it began to wane, and in 1850 began to flourish in russia. Choreographer marius petipa choreographed many of the famous ballets we see today and worked closely with composer tchaikovsky. Some famous ballets they collaborated on: the nutcracker, swan lake, and sleeping.
