Document Summary
Attachment: enduring, emotional bond between infant and another person. The attachments made in infancy predict the attachments made in the future and the ability to attach to others easily. Food is not important for attachment, as other theorists thought. Rhesus monkeys- cloth (no food) vs. wire (food) mother. Ainsworth-adults as secure base from which to explore. I. e. baby goes to explore an area and might crawl back to check up on the secure base. Baby cries when mom leaves; mom comes back and the baby stops crying. Mom leaves, baby cries; mom comes back, baby has mixed reactions. Mom leaves, baby doesn"t cry; mom comes back, baby isn"t happy when the mom comes back. Mother is the cause of attachment styles, some are caused by the baby"s innate temperament. Baby"s attachment style also depends on the responsiveness of the parents. Even if they are overly responsive, the baby can be insecure, doesn"t give baby time to develop itself.
