Document Summary
The study of how genes (nature) and environment (nurture) interact to influence psychological activity. A trait that is influenced by many genes. A statistical estimate of the extent to which variation in a trait within a population is due to genetics. Heritability refers to populations not to individuals. Epigenetics researchers are looking at the processes by which the environment affects genetic expression. Eeg patterns are associated with particular behavioral states. Sleep stages - marked types of waves. Slow wave sleep - defined by the percentage of delta waves. Most of the sleep at night is nrem sleep. Eyes move back and forth (rapid eye movement rem) Babies - a lot of rem (80%) Old people - shorter sleep, less rem. In rem your body is temporarily inhibited ( paralysis ) so your eyes are the only muscles that move. Suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn) is the part of the hypothalamus that tells the brain to secrete melatonin.
