Personality is all the consistent ways in which the behavior of one person differs from that of others, especially in social situations. Psychodynamic theory: relates to personality to the interplay of conflicting forces, including unconscious ones, within the individuals. Mental illness is the result of organic problems. Catharsis- a release of pent-up emotional tension. Psychoanalysis- explaining and dealing with personality based on the interplay of conscious and unconscious forces. Worked with charcot to use hypnotism to achieve catharsis. Switched to free association- easier than hypnotizing pts. Mental life is divided into conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. Unconscious- a repository of memories emotions, and thoughts, many of them illogical, that affect our behavior even though we cannot talk about them. Fixation leads to concerns of dependence and independence. Latent stage (5 or 6 years to puberty) Structure of personality (systems of the mind) Ego- the rational, decision-making aspect of the personality.
