Major depression- extreme condition in which the person experiences little interest, pleasure, or motivation for weeks at a time. More prevalent in women than men in all cultures. Most people recover after a few months. Seasonal affective disorder (sad) - repeatedly becoming depressed during a particular season of the year. Comorbidity with a host of other disorders. Tricyclic- interfere with reabsorption of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Ssris - block reuptake of serotonin only. Mao inhibitors - block breakdown of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin by mao. Episodic nature of disorder makes assessment of treatment effectiveness difficult. Placebos are effective for patients with mild depression. Doctors change meds or dosages when they don"t see progress. Drugs work faster, are cheaper, and easier. Deterioration of ability to perform daily activities. Loss of normal emotional responses and social behaviors. 1 of 1st 3; at least 2 of 5. Hallucinations- perceptions that do not correspond to anything in the real world.
