The brain= 10^11 neurons and even more synapses (where the action is) People knew brain was physically divided into different sections (lobes) but didn"t know why. The folded part= cortex (latin word for rind) It was first area of brain where it"s job was identified. It"s these areas on left side that handle language though (not in everyone though- depends on leftie vs righty) Injured brains might have other areas take over for injured area. Expiriment: used to take infant animals and rewire visual system to auditory. And basically the diff areas of brains adapted and animals grew up relatively normal. Frontal lobe (in front) executive function, decision making. Turns out adjacent pieces of skin map out to adjacent parts of the cortex. Places you have finer sensation have larger area on cortex (that"s why it"s called sensory homunculus- there"s like a map on person inside sensory area of cortex) (lips and genitals have large portion)
