Can look at the brain at different levels. Can look at the brain functionally and structurally. Means you look at the brain at the tissue level. The morphology or the shape of the tissue. Until they discovered that you have to fix the brain to make it easy to cut, couldn"t even do microscopic anatomy. Hard to look at under the microscopic until they looked at staining techniques. Histology: only postmortem or biopsy (when looking at specific types, what looks like weird tumor) It isn"t like taking a sample of the liver. Doing this to the brain is a very scary thing. For a while, they couldn"t decide what stain to use. The golgi stain: 1870s (fairly late in recent history) Only a few neurons if you have a section of brain tissue, only a few neurons will be stained. Can finally see what a brain cell looked like (this was the biggest advantage to the golgi stain)
