Document Summary
Give you examples of each from my own research. The research process is similar in that hypotheses are translated into data. Next slides are meant to be a reminder of what you learned in gen psych: correlational research. Example: the more education people have, the greater their income. Causality question: can we say that education causes higher incomes, no why not, a third factor might explain them both like motivation, highly motivated people might (a) get more schooling, and (b) work harder to get. Positive or negative: the more years the less memory. Causality question: can we say that aging causes memory loss, no why not, a third factor might explain them both like cultural stereotypes. 2: there are two reasons why correlation is not equal to causation, the third variable problem, the directional problem (chicken and egg) Because they can test causal hypothesis: experimental criteria. Treatment can be claimed as the ______ of any observed group difference (the effect)
