Document Summary
Studies relationship between watching violence and acting violently: observation and imitation. Very young infants (a week old) can imitate what they see. Primed to pay attention to others in the world so we can learn from others. We imitate certain people more- people we are attracted to and people we are more similar to. Imitation becomes a habit- especially if not punished or rewarded for the behavior: information processing, scripts. See someone acting aggressive- will think that is the appropriate response in a similar situation. If you see the same response for certain situations- observer is more likely to pick up that behavior: priming. Exposed to set of stimuli- will influence response to future stimulus. Ex. see someone doing an act of kindness on a clip- then flash up a word- will pick up on positive and kind words quicker because of the video- won"t pick up on the negative primed. Watching violence can prime you towards more violent.
