Document Summary
Dualism is more spiritual, that there is a dual nature of reality, the mind is intangible. Monism is based on empirical knowledge, that everything is tangible, mind is from nervous system. ~consciousness defined to be self-awareness and the ability to communicate and think. ~blindsight the phenomenon of being able to react to stimuli despite not consciously seeing them. Happens because there are two visual systems, primitive and mammalian. Primitive system is not connected to consciousness, but is connected to muscle control. If a stroke damages the mammalian system but retains primitive system, then the person eyes will see and cause reaction to stimuli, but they won"t be aware of the sight. Shows that you don"t need to be conscious of a perception to have a behavioral response. In epilepsy, cells on one side of the brain become hyperactive and this is transmitted to the other side as well and causes a generalized seizure.
