Hospitalizations: up to 3 million hospitalizations for oa in the us, ~90% of knee-replacement hospitalization/procedures are due to oa. Along with age, bmi is a strong predictor of serious oa and knee replacement. Rate of knee replacement rising rapidly in last few decades: ~50% of hip-replacement hospitalization/procedures are due to oa, strong age effect. Women are worse off than men e e n.
