Document Summary

The process involved in retaining, retrieving, and using information about stimuli, images, events, ideas, and skills after the original information is no longer present. Long term memory : archive of information about past events in our lives and knowledge we have learned. Goes from just a few moments ago to as far back as we can remember. Most people think ltm is longer ago than it actually is because it spans from a few minute ago to years ago. For over 100 years psychologists distinguished between 2 tpes. Short term memory (stm; primary memory) is the information that us currently active. Long-term memory (ltm; secondary) is the information that is available but not currently active. Little or no decay- failures of retrieval are primarily due to interference. Stm is like a computer"s internal mem. Semantic: facts, just know even though you may not know how you know. Tulving (1972) made the distinction between episodic and semantic memory.
