Industrial Revolution led to rise in technology
o Massive production (factories)
Capitalism needed technology to rise and the:
o Enclosure movement- law initiated by the rich so they could
enclose their property
Led to people being kicked off land
Created an entire army of labor; they had nowhere to go
and nothing to sell other than their labor power-
capitalists presented this idea as liberating
o Capitalism was born out of unequal relationship between
owners and workers
Unions protect workers’ rights
o Ended up being culturally demonized
Commodity- anything that can be bought sold or traded
o Commodification- turning things into something to be bought
o Labor turned into commodity- purchased with hourly wages
Capital vs. Profit:
o Chair example in class = profit $$$
o Capital = money, land, and POWER to dictate time & energy
spent
