SOC 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Santa Barbara City College, Illusory Correlation, Information Processing
Document Summary
Development of stereotypes: shared distinctiveness, outgroup homogeneity. Maintenance of stereotypes: outgroup homogeneity, information processing biases. When we see two distinct (rare) events in time, we assume they go together. Illusory correlation i. e. we assume that all asians wear glasses because we see a distinct asian figure wear a distinct pair of glasses. When the behaviour and the group membership are distinct, the stereotype will occur. People from other groups are all the same. People from my group are all different and special. Attentional bias directing you to notice some things and not other things. You are overly likely to notice the out-group characteristics and they will. If you do notice someone who is different from the bias that you originally had, reinforce the bias and prejudice that you have. then this person is less likely to be encoded into your long-term memory. Iv: target group membership (friendly vs. intelligent)
