March 25, 1931: crimes got reported, the suspects were arrested and detained. Investigation begins while they were in jail: suspects were interrogated, witnesses interviewed, victims (price and bates) interviewed and had a medical exam. Indictment formal charging documents grand jury: arraignment plead innocent or guilty, this was a capital case, none of the council stepped forward. It affirmed (upholds) the conviction sentence of the other 7: appeal to the united states supreme court, the attorneys filed a petition for a write (an order) of certiorari. October 10, 1932: oral arguments in the court. November 7, 1932: decision in powell v. alabama, reverses decision of alabama supreme court and remands. Is the right to counsel in a capital case guaranteed by the due process clause of the 14th amendment: yes. And includes the right to have sufficient time to advise with counsel and prepare a defense. September 7, 2012: quash indictment, quash jury venire.
