HAT 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hypopnea, Pulse Oximetry, Fasciculation
Document Summary
Sleep apnea is a condition in which the patient has episodes with no breathing for periods of 10 seconds or longer. Central apnea that is due to the loss of ventilation effort by the patient. Obstructive apnea that is due to the blockage of the upper airway. Nasal flow decreased and respiratory effort decreases. Nasal flow decreases while the respiratory effort continues. Mixed a mixture or obstructive and central sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is often associated with daytime sleepiness and insomnia at night. Also, the patient a lot of times has a history of smoking and/or obesity. Monitor these parameters while the patient is sleeping: Chest motion there will be a set of elastic bands around the patient"s chest that measure movement, ventilatory effort, and frequency. Hypopnea abnormally slow or shallow breaths. Apnea hypopnea index (ahi) an index used to indicate the severity of sleep apnea.
