PSY 260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: High Top, Spark Plug, Sensory Memory
Document Summary
Duration how long info can be held. Capacity how much info can be held. Control processes system specific processes affecting duration and capacity, make sure we remember. Attention and recognition passes desired number into short-term memory (stm) A rehearsal control process is used to maintain the information in stm. Encoding processes are used to move the information into long-term memory (ltm) Information can be copied from ltm back into stm and used at a later time. Three types of memory that do not act in isolation/ three structural features which are the different stages. Sensory memory: initial stage that holds all incoming information for seconds or fractions of a second. Short-term memory (stm: holds 5-7 items for ~15-20 seonds, seat of consciousness , mediates ongoing tasks and holds current thoughts. Ex: recall a remembered phone number when long term memory sends information to stm (acting together)
