Augustine attention can be involuntarily captured by some sudden event. William james taking possession by mind of one out of several simultaneously possible objects. Cherry dichotic listening paradigm and shadowing task: shadowing task primary and secondary message; repeat primary message how much of secondary message is getting through. Ppl can distinguish physical properties of messages in non-shadowed ear, but couldn"t tell content/meaning of message. Moray: shadowing task unattended channel has one word (ie. primary message, secondary message would be one word such as house) Perceptual limitation; people can"t process message in unattended ear when shadowing message in attended ear.
