Lecture 19 – Self Control in Close Relationships
Review
- Action Identification Theory – people identify action at highest level they can
a. When can’t perform an action as identified, reidentify action at lower level to remind selves
how the action is done
- Distance construal level as overlearned Tendency
a. We are used to have more specific info for near than distal events even when we have
same info, info will be differentially salient in near vs future condit
b. Greater psychological distance higher-level construal
- Temporal Distance and planning
a. Time constraints = feasibility-related aspects of activity
b. 3 predictions
i. Ignore time constraints for distant future students will plan more activities for
distant than near future
ii. Time planned for activities that are perceived as competing for time resources will be
negatively correlated in near but not in distant future
Prediction also derives from underrepresentation of time constraints in distant
future plans
iii. Distant future plans will be more contingent on desirability compared w/ near future
plans
c. 1st session – participants complete activity-desirability questionnaire w/ 2 academic activities
and 7 nonacademic activities
i. Academic – “study” and “attend classes”
ii. Nonacademic activities – “participate in cultural events” “sports and exercise”, etc.
Rated extent they would like to spend more time doing each of these activities
iii. 5-8 wks later, indicate how many hours they would spend on each of activities during
either “next week” or “a week a year from now”
iv. Plan to spend more time on nonacademic things in future (displays ignoring time
constraints)
- Correlation b/w time allotted to competing activities
a. Feasibility considerations require that time allocated to activities perceived as competing for
one’s time resources will be inversely related
b. Assuming that academic and nonacademic activities are perceived as competing for time
- Predicting Future on Basis of Context
a. Participants asked to take trivia quiz either in same experimental session or 1 month later
b. Quiz consisted of MC questions w/ either 2 or 4 resp options
c. Participants presented w/ list of gen knowledge domains and indicated confidence in
answering q correctly
