Psych approaches to studying perception focus on human judgments in resp stim. Psych have devised some of the besta tasks to study percep: recognition, search. Considered high level perception: detection, discrim, magnitude. Recognition/identification task: show you something and task may be to name it as quickly as possible. Experimenter: is there a t in the noise area. What is the minimum intensity of a stim needed for perception. The task is to say whether or nott you perceived the stim. The intensity at which they start saying n or. Y is the crossover point: averaging the crossover points gives the detection threshold, absolute threshold = the min amount of energy needed for detection by perceptual syst. A stim below this threshold won"t be detected, a stim above will be detected. Classical threshold theory: predicts a step psychometric function. Psychophysics = the study of perception dealing w/ quantitative relationships b/w physical stim and perceptual experience.
