Obesity: excessive body weight, indicated by a body mass index (bmi) over 30. Obesity increases an individual"s risk for a wide range of health problems. Body mass index (bmi): a measure of the body fat based on height and weight. Food deserts: geographic areas in which residents do not have easy access to high-quality affordable food. These regions are concentrated in rural areas and poor urban neighborhoods. Sociology of the body: a field that focuses on how our bodies are affected by social influences. Health and illness, for instance, are determined by social and cultural influences. Sociology of sexuality: a field that explores and debated the importance of biological versus social and cultural influences on human sexual behavior. Health: a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In premodern cultures, family was the main institution for coping with sickness or affliction.
