Max Weber: Multidimensional Theory of Power: Three component theory of stratifctaion, or
the three classes system. Class, status and power as distinct ideal types.
• Political economics, best known for his thesis relating Protestantism to capitalism for his
ideas on bureaucracy
• Three types of authority: 1) Rational-legal authority, 2) Traditional Authority, which

• Theory on Race, worte about the veil which is an imaginary barrier that seperates whites

Ideal Types: typological term associated with Max Weber who argued that bureaucracy
constitutes the most efficient and rational way in which one can organize the human activity and
that systematic processes and organized hierarchies are necessary to main order, maximize
efficiency and eliminate favoritism
Verstehen - empathic understanding of human behavior, associated with Max Weber
• It’s a German term that means to understand, perceive, know and comprehend the nature
and significance of a phenomenon
• Refers to the understanding the mean of action from the actors point of view
This-worldly asceticism - characterized by Max Weber in economy and society as the
concentration of human behavior upon activities leading to salvation within the context of the
everyday world.
Herbert Blumer - was a student and interpreter of Meed, coined the term and put forward an
influential summery; people act a certain way towards things based on the meaning those things
already have, and those meanings are derived from social interactiomns. He was a social
constructionist and influenced by Dewey
Symbolic Interactionism is a frame of reference to better understand how individuals interact
with one another to create symbolic worlds and in return how these worlds shape individual
behavior. It was conceived by Herbert Meed and Charles Cooley
• Meed wrote “Mind, Self & Society”

Thomas Theorem- “definition of the situation: if men define situations as real, they are real in
their consequences for the interpretation of a situation causes it action
Cooley “Looking Glass Self” - socialization shapes self imags. Our self view comes form our
perspective on how we are being perceived 1. How do I appear to others? 2. What do others
think of me? 3. How do we think about ourselfs?
