Document Summary
Identity categories essential to the modern nation state: name, mailing address, identification number, sex, birthday, race, country of origin. Identity is always a relationship : identification signals inclusion in a category or group- such as a nation or family or face- but it also signals exclusion and difference from others. Our identities are not always voluntary or chosen by us. (149) The nation-state: nation-states have not always existed. Grewal and kaplan definition of nation state: a state can be seen as the political and bureaucratic institutions, practices, and policies that govern a given territory and population. A nation implies a community of people who are believed to be or believe themselves to be similar or connected by a common identity. Nation is a common identity, a feeling of belonging in a particular group- for example we celebrate the 4th of july which makes us feel a sense of nationalism and pride; dressing up in red, white, & blue.
