Many written letters correspond to more that one speech sound. Vowels and consonants differ in their basic manner of production. Vowels are produced with no constriction in the vocal tract; relatively large distance between the tongue and roof of the mouth. Vowels are produced in the front back dimension or high to low dimension. Classified by jaw height and placement of the tongue. Front vowels are produced with spread lips.
