NSD 225 Lecture Notes - Fall 2018 Lecture 5 - Diverticulum, Ketone bodies, Brush border
Document Summary
^ most simple form but can link together with other forms and create diff compounds. Carbohydrates - combination of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Disaccharides - sucrose, maltose, lactose (there is glucose in all of them) In food supply, combined with other things (other glucose or other monosaccharide) Fructose - in fruits and vegetables, is a component of table sugar when combined with glucose. Disaccharides - two glucose together - maltose - Sucrose = fructose + glucose = sugar (table sugar) Glycogen - how humans and animals store glucose, food for later on. Fibers (cellulose) - structural parts of plants, found in all plant derived foods (fruits, vegetables) Diabetes and heart disease - soluble fibers - inside of fruits, seeds, beans, help protect against heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol. Functional fiber: added to food for beneficial effect. Foods have a combination of fibers - apple! Insoluble fiber: the skin of the apple, will reduce constipation.
