Very early views of children: dominant view was that children are essentially defective adults, from emotional, uncivilized to rational, scienti c. Transitioning to another view: philosophers in the 17th and 18th century stared thinking about children in a di erent way. Experience ful ll them, blank slick when they born. Why is it important to study child development: understanding the origins of behavior both a kid and an adult. Understanding individual development: optimize the condition of development, what is the best way to raise a kid, understanding typical and abnormal development, choosing social policy. Romanian orphans. institutionalized kid with minimum human contact from the outside world. Bucharest early intervention project: institutionalized children. The kids in the institution have lower iq scores than the community kids. The kids in foster care show improvement in their iq score that we don"t see it of the kids in the institution. Themes: is it nature or nurture?- it"s both.
