QSX 111 Lecture 1: QSX 111 Class 1 notes
Document Summary
There is a white male standard in this country against which everyone else is measured. If you are female, color, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, disabled, you are seen as lacking. Each oppressed group in the united states is positioned in a particular and distinct relationship with white men. Our exposure to racist messages in the form of stereotypes not only causes us to be racist, But it also teaches most of us to hate ourselves based upon our relationship to the norm. Not thought of as leaders or participants in either struggle. There is not a single word for ppl who don t fit gender norms that is positive, affirming, or complimentary. There is not even a word that is neutral. Gender can be said to be a language, a system of meanings and symbols. Language fails us in describing, identifying, our sense of ourselves in relation to the most unique things about us, our bodies.
