Tasmanian people fought back against english people who called them cannibals/savages; but english wiped them out/put them on display in zoos/circuses. Rise of naziism -- playing on fears of german population; demonized. Stems from need to eval differing cultural practices to understand their behavior. Tradition for old/infirm/unable to contribute to society to walk off onto ice to die alone. Americans value freedom and free-choice: marriage, vote, career, speech. Socialist/communist countries not the same because of political history. Dowry: bride"s family gives something of value to groom"s family (land/livestock) Bride price: groom"s family comes up with something of value to present to. Ogburn and social lag: some values change more slowly than others -- still see bride"s family some form of bride price/dowry today (bride"s family pays for wedding) Very different attitudes regarding the body and its functions. Nude bathing: common in japan to bathe nude with your guests.
