Lived in longhouses (up to 50 people/house) Composed of extended families based on matrilineal descent. Nuclear families had very little separation from one another. Largest settlements had ~40 longhouses (1500-2000 people) Heavily fortified -- built on high land, palisades surrounded communities. Elderly women make daily decisions for the households. Decided where people would live in surrounding fields. Produced 75% of diet, little bit of hunting/fishing on side. New field would last only 4-6 years; didn"t have advanced farming techniques to make fields last longer.
