Surplus is redistributed by chief/king: no symbolic monetary system or standing armies, strong trade network, some social strati cation. Limited caste system: some craft specialization, ex: cahokia. Must protect surplus: very high craft specialization, class or caste system, must have writing & system of records. 4 basic social classes: the aztec: nobles. Kings & queens thought to be of divine line. Pocheteca: achieved status through warfare, war heroes, professionals. Macehual: owned their own land, paid tribute to empire. Mayeque: serfs, wage-earners, worked other people"s land, kept part of what they grew as wages. Tuesday, september 26, 2017: not usually a permanent condition, a way to pay o debt, foreigners. Military: span all classes, maintain tribute system. Social strati cation: social groups, such as families/classes/ethnic groups that have unequal access to important advantages such as economic resources/power/prestige, fairly modern, came about with agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, 3 advantages.
