In areas where there are obstacles in food production: marginal areas. Extant foraging societies may/may not resemble foraging societies from the past. Now have the ability to trade w/societies practicing other subsistence strategies. Early anther claimed men were primary food-getters: failed to mention women gathering, biased because of the culture of the time. Early anthropologists were male, so they tended to bond with the men in another culture. Weren"t allowed to talk to women, so they never got their side of the story: ex: !kung & ngatatjara, gathering by women is main source of food. Recent de nitions of foraging includes shing: men typically hunt & sh, therefore are often primary food suppliers. Is it a tough life: ju/ hoansi (aka !kung) No leader: decisions are made by the group: those who didn"t agree were free to leave.
