Document Summary

Field studies collect information on nonhuman primates in their natural habitats. Free-ranging: non-captive animals living in their natural habitat, free from constrains imposed by humans. Ecology: the relationship between organisms and all aspects of their environment. Behaviors have evolved through the operation of natural selection. Behavior are at least partially influenced by genes (one gene one behavior) Behavioral ecology: study of evolution of behavior, emphasizing the role of ecological factors as agents of natural selection. How behavior contributes to survival and reproductive success. The bigger you are, the less surface area you have in relation to your volume--> less heat you lose. One 10 pound monkey will radiate less heat than two 5-pound monkeys, therefore have to eat less food. Bigger body = using relatively less energy = food stays in system longer. Philopatry = staying with the same group you"re born in. Competition with other groups of the same species.
