Jane goodall: no college degree, ultimately got phd, worked with chimpanzees in tanzania, named her apes not specimen numbers, talked about emotions, relationships, spokesperson for conservation for habitat. Dian fossey: murdered in 1987, fought poachers, worked with mountain gorillas in rwanda and uganda, more scholarly in approach. Birute galditas: developed sanctuary for orphaned orangutans, studied in borneo. All worked with conservation and revolutionized the field: new methods, new way of looking at data. Old world monkeys: europe, asia, and africa and sometimes australia (rarely) Superfamily hominoidea: great apes, lesser apes, humans. Hominoids are descended from old world monkeys. Larger body size (exception of gibbons and siamangs) Laterally compressed: narrower thorax and pelvis, longer trunk. Different body structure, hanging by hands and arms. Stable elbow joint: wider range of movement, designed for mobility and stability. Humeral head and scapula rotate more freely. High limb mobility and upper body mobility. Sternum and rib cage are broader: broader pelvis because of broader ribcage.
