Document Summary

Life"s basic characteristic is a high degree of order. Biological organization is based on a hierarchy of levels. At the lowest level- atoms- build complex biological molecules are arranged into cell structures and organelles-> cells. Multicelular organism exhibit 3 major structural levels above the cell similar cells grouped into tissues. Novel properties emerge at each step upward in biological hierarchy. Reductionism 0 reducing complex systems to simpler components is a powerful strategy for understand biology. The reduction of complex systems to simpler component are more manageable. An understanding of biology balances reduction with the study of emergent properties. Ex: new understanding by studying interactions between molecules. System biology- constructs models for dynamic behavior of whole biological systems. Eukaryotic- cells are subdivided by internal membranes-> organelles. Prokaryotic- do not have organelles but they have prokaryotes cell wall. Dna is the substance of genes, the unit of inheritance. All forms of life employ the same genetic code.
