Document Summary

Dissociation of water molecules is the basis for acidic and water. Can dissociate into hydronium ions and hydroxide ions. At equilibrium the concentrations of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions are both very low. For weak acids are bases the binding in release of hydrogen ions is reversible. In any solution the product of hydronium and hydroxide concentration is constant at 10^-14 because of the physical properties of water bonds. Buffers consists of a weak acid base pair that reversibly combines with hydrogen ions. Accept hydronium ions from solutions when they"re in excess. Donate hydronium to solution when free hydronium is low.
