Living cells requiring transfusion of energy from the outside. Energy ows and as sunlight and leaves as heat. Catabolic pathways yield energy by oxidizing organic fuels. Cellular respiration: most prevalent and ef cient catabolic pathway. Do not completely exchange electrons- change the degree of electron sharing in covalent bonds. During cellular respiration glucose is oxidized and oxygen reduced. If electron transfer is not stepwise there would be a larger release of energy. Electrons in organic compounds are usually transferred to nad+ Citric acid cycle: complete the breakdown of glucose.
