FIVS 123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Criminal Negligence, Skid Mark, Law Enforcement Officer
Document Summary
They design systems to make life easier, safer, and/or more efficient. Need to be flexible, as sometimes their designs may need to change due to parameters of which they have no control. All engineers employ similar approaches to problem solving. Forensic engineers are problem solvers as well. Forensic engineers are not involved in the birth of a new product or structure, but in the aftermath of product or structure failure. Called upon to investigate why an engineered product failed: failure due to aging, lack of maintenance or faulty materials or design, sometimes due to tampering with a product. In this case the investigation becomes more criminal. Intentionally causing failure that leads to damage, injury, or possibly death pairs the forensic engineer with law enforcement. Inspect failures and reconstruct, if necessary, the conditions prior to the accident to determine any improperties. Usually called in long after an event occurred.
