Upstate new york: the shape of the empire state. George washington said it would become the seat of the empire. New york controlled the path to the continental interior. Lake champlain and lake george were main passes between the seaboard colonies and canada before exploration further west. Oriented to the interior as opposed to the ocean. Adirondack mountains: old, rugged mountain region, different geography from other mountain ranges. Great gap: hudson and mohawk river valleys, natural, easy approach to west interior, form gateway to lake plains and through prairies to rocky mountains, mohawk valley earliest and most inviting gateway. Spillways: formed by glaciation, lake iroquois formed and spillways were formed through the mountains (creating mohawk river valley, etc. ) Mohawk and hudson valleys were the place for major battlegrounds during fight for supremacy between french and english. West point: big bend in river, vital tactic spot, later became home to american military academy.
